Jyn's Theme is the best of the movie, but doesn't rank very highly among John Williams's material. I think this is a perfect case of the difference between brilliance and genius. I could listen more carefully to his scoring of the action scenes-this is where Giacchino really shines. Krennic's theme sounds childish ("Here comes the bad guy!") and the Guardians of the Whills is forgettable. Also good use of the Dies Irae trope when Vader tries to board the Tantive. I was very impressed with the music during the Death Star laser blasts, on both occasions. I was happy that he was very economical about John Williams's material. Michael Giacchino quite effectively produced a very "Star Wars" sounding soundtrack. I've just recently listened to the soundtrack through Spotify and with my re-listen, I am much more impressed. However, there were a million of other things to focus on within the movie, so it's understandable that perhaps my focus on the soundtrack fell by the wayside. This is certainly the case for many of the Star Wars soundtracks (John Williams is a theme making god) and the fact that I left Rogue One without particularly remembering any new theme left me feeling the soundtrack was just okay. Good soundtracks, to me at least, tend to have strong, memorable themes.
